Epileptical Treatment in India

In epilepsy there are intermittent seizures in the body due to the disturbances in the neuronal functions in the brain.

According to physicians, epilepsy is the result of the imbalance of some chemicals called neurotransmitters in the brain.

It is a common neurological disorder affecting some 1 in 200 people all round the world.  The prevalence of epilepsy is around 1% of the population in developing countries.

By this estimate, in India there are about 10 million people suffering from epilepsy at any given point of time.

In Epileptical treatment in India, a large proportion of the people go for alternative treatment. As opposed to the scenario in developing countries, the prevalence of the disease is only 0.5 % per 100 million people in developed countries.

One of the reasons for the high incidence of epilepsy in India is the higher risk of experiencing a condition which can lead to permanent brain damage. In epilepsy, a majority of the affected people remain untreated. Some 50 million people all over the worlds are suffering from epilepsy. Out of this around 35 million people do not have access to proper medical treatment.

The social consequences of epilepsy are more difficult to be won over than the seizures themselves. In some rural areas of India, people think the person suffering from epileptic bouts have been affected by evil spirits and they make arrangements to exorcize them.

This is the truth about Epileptical treatment in India. Epilepsy is not a mental disorder and is curable and in most cases preventable. In epilepsy drugs have to be taken for a long period of time.

In Epileptical treatment in India, he most common anti epileptic drug used was phenytoin, followed by phenobarbitone.

Ayurvedic treatment was the most common alternative Epileptical treatment in India. While a few decades’ back evil spirits were believed to have caused this disease, the new breed of population have done away with this belief.

There is a marked difference in the approach to Epileptical treatment in India and other developed countries and developed countries. In most developing countries, seizure may not be considered an emergency that needs an immediate medical attention. Studies in urban centers show that a sizeable proportion of the population goes for alternative Epileptical treatment in India. The most common choice was ayurveda followed by sorcery, homoeopathy and naturopathy. There is still a taboo attached to epilepsy but that is prevalent more in rural areas. In urban areas belief in medicine is prevalent.
